But then I remember that I am the one storing it in my climate-controlled sanctuary, staring at it through my reading glasses, and preparing to wrap it in rigid cardboard like a fragile holy relic.

Here we have Tales to Astonish #8, published in the bleak post-winter of March 1960. It is a comic from an era when Marvel was still Atlas, and Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko were pumping out stories about giant, disgruntled creatures who seemed to exist solely to crush municipal infrastructure and cause mild inconvenience to suburbanites.

Story Recap

In the lead feature, "Mummex, King of the Mummies, Lives Again!!", an ancient cosmic mummy awakens after millennia of peaceful subterranean slumber only to discover that humanity is just as insufferable as it was during the Bronze Age. Naturally, Mummex decides the only reasonable response is to smash pyramids and terrorize passersby. Jack Kirby draws him with the kind of kinetic, existential rage usually reserved for men waiting in line at the Post Office.

As if giant bandages weren't enough, you also get "I Dared Defy The Floating Head!"—a story in which a giant disembodied green head hovers over Manhattan threatening global conquest, while everyday citizens mostly seem annoyed about the potential traffic delays. Steve Ditko’s eerie, precise linework makes the absurdity feel remarkably plausible.

Collector Significance

Before Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider or the Fantastic Four took an ill-advised cosmic ray joyride, Marvel built its empire on these weird, magnificent monster anthologies. Tales to Astonish #8 is a prime example of the late-period Silver Age Atlas monster era.
